What is a Wheeze?
Wheezing is a shrill, whistling, or rattling sound produced when the airway is partially blocked. It is most prominent during exhalation but can occur during inhalation.
- Common Causes: Asthma, allergies, pneumonia, common cold, emphysema, or heart failure.
- Risk Groups: Infants, the elderly, and smokers are most prone to developing these sounds.

How does Tyto Insight work?
The system utilizes a Convolutional Recurrent Neural Network (CRNN) algorithm. This AI model was trained using thousands of real-world recordings to differentiate between normal breath sounds and wheezing patterns.
Workflow Integration
1. Live Online Visit (Clinician Station)
Clinicians can trigger wheeze detection during a live video exam to get immediate decision support.
2. Offline Point of Care (TytoPro)
Providers can use Insight seamlessly while examining patients in person using the TytoPro app.
Key Indications
- Wheezing Detected: Patterns matching wheezing found.
- No Wheezing Detected: Normal breath patterns identified.
- Analysis Failed: Usually due to poor sound quality or environmental noise.
Frequently Asked Questions
- How do I enable this? It is off by default. Admins must go to Organization > Configurations > System Parameters and set "Enable clinician insights" to ON.
- Why is this not for patients under 2? This is a limitation of the current FDA clearance; younger patients require a different regulatory submission.
- Can I use this for a final diagnosis? No. The FDA clears this as a "decision support" tool for validation, not as a standalone diagnostic tool.
Clinical Note: For the most accurate AI analysis, ensure the patient is breathing through an open mouth and the stethoscope is in firm contact with bare skin.
